Senate bill would block mandatory labeling of GMOs
I'm still not sure what I think on GMO and labeling. Im pro-labels in general but not positive if GMO labels do anything besides give insinuations on GMO products that are uncertain. Any thoughts?

DietID_TeamDietitians 8yr The question of "certainty" is it's own issue because a ton of new research has come out on the topic, so I won't comment on that. But as far as labels go, it's really about knowing what's in your food just like we know if your clothes are made in Vietnam or USA and that your shirt has 88% polyester. Many people are concerned about presence of gmos and the info is available, so why would we hide it? (Also note - you can no longer know what country your meat comes from - that's a whole other issue ) I'm sure plenty of people have opinions on this matter, so please chime in! -

etsummer 8yr I do agree with @Rachna...why not label? it's giving consumers a chance to be more informed and responsible eaters, and it's their job to do that research to decide if it's something they want to purchase or not. The problems come in with people who don't want to put that effort in. I've heard some annoyance from organic farmers about the non-GMO label in general as non-GMO is included in the organic label, but consumers aren't aware of it so they look for both. Which then brings you to the problem of green washing and illegitimate labels. I think we need one, all-encompassing official labeling system for food, maybe with different levels. I know Whole Foods' new rating system comes with its own set of problems, but I like the structure/format of it. -

Yfalkson 8yr Totally agree, fact or fiction, legislating away rights to information is unacceptable, similar to ag gag rules. A clear example of congress not serving the people. Gmo is a messy concept, apparent there is no non gmo cheese, but some approaches are scarier than others. Just wait until we start using CRSPR to edit genes directly. Could save millions of lives or do the opposite. -
DietID_TeamDietitians 8yr Yea! I'm so glad you mentioned CRSPR - it's a near future thing and we need to protect consumer rights as we barrel down the path of "innovation"
