FarmerDave 8yr Yes, I've heard aquaponics are extremely expensive, and are also a sensitive system. Although novel, it may not be the way we grow all our food. Just my 2 cents.

JohnnyBowman 8yr Disclaimer: I work for an aquaponics startup (Edenworks) that grows at industrial scale. Grove Labs' home systems are meant as an educational/discovery tool for families and folks who dig growing things - similar to an upscale fish tank - but they've got an app component that does a great job monitoring and explaining the ecosystem's complexity. No system, aquaponics or hydro, will give you adequate yields to live off of if it's the size of a dresser. I've seen Grove's customers grow some people cool and exotic herbs that you can't find in stores though. As for the expense, there's nothing inherently expensive about aquaponics - it's a plastic tank of fish. Whether you use fish feed or hydro nutrients they're gonna cost a few percentage points of revenue for large commercial facilities, and the CAPEX aquaculture costs are small compared to everything else. It just gets expensive if your ecosystem gets outta whack, you don't respond adequately, and all your fish and plants die - which is a real problem for most hobbyist aquaponics farmers.
