Broth adds so much more flavor to grains than water does! I served fresh red snapper, green salad and tangy Meyer lemon salsa with the rich quinoa, and it balanced the dish perfectly. #kitchentips
  • JenniferEmilson Unless it's for breakfast I try to cook all grains in broth. My mom taught me that one!! You're right, it ups the depth and creaminess of grains, whether rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, etc
  • annefood I've never cooked buckwheat @JenniferEmilson, only the flour! I should try that.
  • gingerandchorizo I agree with @JenniferEmilson! And I am just posting a new salad recipe here with roasted buckwheat which is also cooked in veggie broth :)

Avocado kept fresh
8yr
I recently found an easy way to store half / part of an avocado from turning brown .
Simply cover it in plastic wrap ( in a nicely sealed air tight manner ) and place in the fridge.
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Yes! Also storing it with the pit and in lemon juice also works! #kitchentips
  • Yfalkson Pretty sure I heard the pit part is actually a myth. I think Kenji Lopez from The Foodlab tested it
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Really?! Oof I'll give it a try sans the lemon juice. I always use both and it seems to work, but a true scientist would say only test one variable at a time :)

Made a speedy breakfast with @akhilg2002 of mushrooms topped with poached eggs and homegrown basil (yes the basil is still alive!). Not perfect, but these eggs turned out better than before. I trie...
  • JenniferEmilson Yes- while you are waiting for your water to boil, and then drop to a moderate summer, crack your egg onto a small sieve (like you light use for tea) set over a cup. Let it drain all the loose bits...
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Oh wow I was stirring like crazy! I'll try this next time. Thanks!
  • marynfulton2 Add a little vinegar to your water! It helps the egg stay together as well 😊

If you're a prepared garlic fan, buy freeze-dried. It's the only type that maintains its nutrients.

"Don't cry—it's only dinner prep!"
  • Gwendolyn That makes so much sense! They say the most potent onions actually have more cancer-fighting properties, so I'm glad to know of a solution for the tearful chop!
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Stellar #kitchentip! I also heard if you leave the faucet running while chopping onions, your eyes won't tear. This may be an old wive's tale, but it seems to work for me. Anyone have other tips...
  • jodavis @rachna I love that one. I've tried chewing gum but I still cry! Would love to know others.

Cooked tomatoes are better for you than raw ones. The longer they cook, the better for you they become.

  • Udi What is Dashi?
  • annefood @Udi it's a Japanese broth made from water, kombu (kelp) and bonito flakes (dried tuna). The nice thing is that you can make it without fresh ingredients.
