Are there limitations on regulations when a product lists “no added sugar” like with other terms we see? ie: “organic” and “natural”.

  • annefood Great question @ingalls ! Supposedly no added sugar on a label means no honey, molasses, high-fructose corn syrup, malt syrup or cane syrup. There are many other sugars that therefore seemingly...
  • ingalls Thanks @annefood! The internet searches get overwhelming sometimes. ;-)
  • annefood Indeed they do!

Can I use whole milk and espresso without sweetener? Definitely better flavor but doesn’t the whole milk replace sugar w other calories??
  • annefood Using whole milk instead of sweetener is a great replacement! When thinking about a healthy whole/real foods diet, don’t focus on the calories. If you turn your attention to the quality of the...

I spied Agave Syrup in my ‘natural’ peanut butter before putting it in my smoothie!

  • DietID_TeamDietitians yes!! so many 'natural' products sneak in sweeteners. Definitely check the ingredient labels on the back of the package. The front of the package is all marketing =).
  • annefood Awesome @ingalls! You’ll come to find that many companies slap “natural” on the label for impact, when the word doesn’t actually have any meaning. Great catch!
Looking for quick snack ideas without added sugar. Something I can have with me on the go. Thanks!

  • DietID_TeamDietitians My favorite no added sugar to-go snacks: larabars, mary’s Seed crackers with hummus, grapes, mixed nuts, and for a treat - almond butter-stuffed dates (2 of them will fill you up).
  • AlexB Thank you! Going shopping today to stock up a bit more.
  • annefood I always keep an apple in my bag. Brown rice cakes with nut butter are great too, for protein, as are those crispy baked chickpea snacks you can either make or buy in a pouch. Carrot sticks are...

How do the streaks work?? I don’t really understand. Mine is always zero :(
6yr
  • annefood A streak is when you don’t use any full or half passes, and thus successfully avoid added sugar. No passes used for 3 days and you have a 3 day streak, for example. It resets when you use one- I...
  • shmoozii I was wondering about that too.

“Lactic acid” vs “Lactose” on the list of 56 sugar names - also something to avoid?
6yr
  • annefood No, you don’t need to avoid lactic acid in the Avoid Added Sugar Challenge. It’s used in fermentation (yogurt, pickled veggies, sourdough...) and as a preservative or flavoring agent.
  • annefood And lactose is an intrinsic sugar (not an added sugar) that is naturally occurring in dairy. So no need to worry about that either.
  • ingalls Thanks! I kept looking it up. ;-)

tovisnaw's post
  • annefood Fantastic @tovisnaw ! @elievois check it out - it has stevia so it's not unsweetened, but pure stevia leaf extract is allowed in moderation on the Avoid Added Sugar Challenge.
  • tovisnaw This one is so good too. If tried other protein powders and they tasted gross to me
  • elievois Good to know! Thanks for posting!
